Hi everyone! It’s Beth, owner of B at Your Service, we’re here to talk about home organization and how to get started. I know that the thought of organizing your entire home can be daunting, but don’t worry, with my experience organizing so many of my clients’ homes, I’ve got you covered!
A cluttered and disorganized home can lead to stress and anxiety, but when you have a neat and tidy space, you’ll feel more relaxed and in control. Plus, it’s much easier to find what you need when everything is in its place.
Step 1: Assess & Clear Your Space
So, where do you start? My advice is to pick one area of your home to focus on at a time. Don’t try to tackle the entire house all at once. Trust me, you’ll burn out quickly and end up feeling overwhelmed. Instead, choose a room or even just a closet to start with.
The next step is to take everything out of the space. Yes, I mean everything. This may seem counterintuitive, but it’s important to start with a clean slate so you can see exactly what you have and assess your storage needs.
Step 2: Declutter Like You Mean It
Now it’s time to declutter. This is when you go through all of your items and get rid of anything that you no longer need, use, or love. Donate, sell, or toss items that are broken, stained, or worn out. If you’re having trouble letting go of items, ask yourself if you’ve used them in the past year. If the answer is no, it’s time to say goodbye – you won’t miss them.
Step 3: Group Like Items Together
Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to put like items together. For example, if you’re organizing your pantry, you’ll want to put all of your spices together, all of the canned goods together, all of the baking items together, and so on. This makes it easier to see what you have and choose appropriate bins to store each category.
Step 4: Find a Storage Solution
The next step is to find a storage solution for those items. Find a way to store each category of items in a neat and accessible way. You don’t have to go out and buy fancy bins; you can get creative and use what you already have. For example, shoe boxes or diaper boxes wrapped in pretty paper make great storage containers on a budget.
Step 5: Label Everything
Labeling is also important. Label bins, boxes, and organizers so you know what’s inside and can easily find what you need. You can print a simple tag from the computer, use a label maker, a nice chalk marker, or even handwrite a chalkboard label. Whatever style works for you and the material you’re labeling, being able to easily read what’s where will make life easier for you and your family.
Step 6: Refill the Space
Now it’s time to refill the space. Start with the items that you use most often and put them in the most accessible spot. Infrequently used items can go on higher shelves or in other harder-to-reach spaces. Make sure everything has a home and keep like items together.
Step 7: Make it a Habit
The final step is to train yourself to put things back in their spot. This is important if you want to maintain your organized space. Put a visual cue, like a post-it note, to remind yourself to put things back where they belong. Over time, it will become second nature.
Step 8: Be Willing to Tweak and Change
And last but not least, don’t be afraid to change organizing systems that aren’t working. If your system isn’t practical or workable, reassess and make changes. The goal is to have a system that works for you and makes your life easier.
