1. Make your home look occupied. One of the best ways to deter burglars is to make your home look like someone is there. This can be done by setting timers for lights and electronics, so they turn on and off at different times of the day.
2. Put any extra keys inside. Keeping keys hidden near your door is convenient when you lock yourself out, but leaving one outside can compromise the security of your home, especially when you’re away on vacation.
3. Stop your mail and newspaper delivery or have someone pick them up. A pile of newspapers or a full mailbox can be a dead giveaway to potential thieves that you’re away on vacation.
4. Arrange for lawn care and maintenance. A well-manicured lawn and a home that is well-maintained can make it less likely that a burglar will target your property.
