As the owner of B At Your Service, a personal assistant and concierge service, one of the common concerns I hear from my clients is how to protect their home while they’re away on vacation. As a homeowner myself, I understand the importance of feeling secure and protected, even when you’re miles away from your home. That’s why my team of personal assistants, affectionately known as “the Bees,” and I have put up this list of 10 ways to protect your home while on vacation.
- Make your home look occupied. One of the best ways to deter burglars is to make your home look like someone is there. This can be done by setting timers for lights and electronics, so they turn on and off at different times of the day.
- Put any extra keys inside. Keeping keys hidden near your door is convenient when you lock yourself out, but leaving one outside can compromise the security of your home, especially when you’re away on vacation.
- Stop your mail and newspaper delivery or have someone pick them up. A pile of newspapers or a full mailbox can be a dead giveaway to potential thieves that you’re away on vacation.
- Arrange for lawn care and maintenance. A well-manicured lawn and a home that is well-maintained can make it less likely that a burglar will target your property.
- Keep your heat on if you’re vacationing during the winter. Set it to 55 or 60 degrees. Burglars aren’t the only threat to your home, after all. Pipes that freeze and burst could cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage before you return home.
- Install a quality security system. A security system can be a great way to protect your home while you’re away. A professionally installed, high-quality security system can be set to notify the authorities if there’s any intrusion into your home.
- Install motion-detecting lights. Motion-detecting lights can be a great way to deter burglars, as they’ll light up your property if anyone steps into view of the sensor.
- Keep valuables out of sight and secure. If you have valuable items in your home, be sure to keep them out of sight, or even better, in a safe.
- Make a copy of your house key and give it to your personal assistant, friend, or family member. This way, if something does happen, you’ll have someone you trust who can get into your home and take care of things.
